Our Successes
Xstream Cleanup’s primary focus is to engage the community to come together and care for our area’s water quality. The efforts have been extraordinarily successful—aided by sponsor assistance, our network of community volunteers has removed a total of 4,580 pounds of litter and several tons of other debris from Quad City area waterways. In the last several years, we also have helped Living Lands & Waters reach its goal of distributing 1 million trees for planting. Various groups and towns, with the help of Xstream Cleanup, have made progress in removing many acres of harmful invasive plants like garlic mustard and purple loosestrife.
Our Growth
We continue with efforts to maintain healthy water in the Quad Cities area and seek new opportunities to fulfill our mission. In 2017, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced it would no longer supporting the IOWATER program. IOWATER was a citizen-based scientific program for individuals and groups to assess the health of local waterways. Because collaborative efforts to care for area waterways are at the core of the Xstream Cleanup mission, our leadership decided to take on responsibility for citizen-based periodic stream sampling in the Quad Cities area.
Xstream Cleanup continues to create opportunities for volunteers to clean up waterways, remove invasive plants and rear tree saplings, and we will now assume leadership in conducting three annual countywide stream sampling assessments.
Continuing Cleanups With Your Help!
How do we do all this? We continue to rely on funding to keep our efforts going. Providing support and becoming a sponsor will help fund t-shirts, supplies and marketing. In addition, your support helps to supply test kits and a limited number of professional assessments of water samples.
